Compressed Argon Gas

ILMO Products Company originates and sells PurityPlus® Argon for those businesses in Springfield that can use it.

Several attributes eventually led Argon to become a winning candidate for technical applications, such as providing nuclear scientists with the dense atmosphere required to segregate neutrons, in the waning years of the nineteenth century:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its relative abundance compared to other scarce gases, and
  • its commercial workability.

Easily, the widest early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs at the start of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial emergence of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s needed a dense inert gas, typically Argon-based. Even though none of these are honest-to-goodness specialty-gas purity applications, the call for them is stronger than ever and they still constitute a major segment of Argon’s sales volume.

Today, the primary specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in a number of analytical instrument applications, for example: in the ferreting out and assessment of trace and ultra-trace elements employing Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon also finds application in many methods of Gas Chromatography, in particular those that employ a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It’s also used as a carrier gas when analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. With the passage of time, Argon has seen greater use by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
